Powdered metal manufacturing is a dependable method for creating complex, high-precision components across industries that demand consistency at scale. From automotive to medical devices, engineers increasingly turn to powder metallurgy because it delivers design flexibility, tight tolerances, as well as material efficiency.

At Compax, we strive to support engineering and procurement teams and provide the range of expertise needed to bring a powdered metal component from concept to production. Founded in 1962, we’ve built our reputation on diligent follow-up, quick turnaround, and dependable delivery for customers across automotive, aerospace, medical, electronics, and other precision-driven markets.

This page walks through our full-service capabilities, including compaction, sintering, quality controls, and secondary operations. Explore each section below to learn more about how we can support your project.

Sintering

Sintering is a heat treatment process that turns compacted powder into solid metal parts as they pass through a furnace under a controlled atmosphere and temperature. This heat causes a metallurgical bond to form between particles, and controlled cooling locks in strength and shape, resulting in a solid, structurally sound part built without casting or pouring molten metal.

At Compax, we operate belt, pusher, and batch furnaces along with sinter heat-treating and drawing equipment, giving us the flexibility to match the right thermal process to the given application. We have furnaces that can reach temperatures up to 3,000 °F (1,650 °C), higher than what many competitors in our area are able to offer. That extra capability with sintering can improve mechanical strength and significantly enhance the performance of stainless steel materials, including for parts destined for corrosive or high-load environments.

Beyond straightforward sintering, we also provide blackening, passivation, and annealing services. Offering these under one roof allows for tighter scheduling and fewer opportunities for error between processes. You can read more about our furnace capabilities on our sintering page.

Compaction

Before sintering can happen, metal powder needs to be shaped and densified through compaction. The powder itself can be a pre-blend or can be custom-blended to project specifications, with a wide range of metal materials that can be used. Powder is gravity-fed into a die and typically compacted at room temperature, with pressing pressures commonly falling between 30 and 50 tons per square inch. Using an automated range spanning 2 to 250 tons allows us to handle small, delicate components and larger parts.

Most components are pressed in a single-cavity die using a vertical stroke. Depending on part size, we often can press anywhere from 8 to 22 parts per minute. Smaller, simpler geometries move through the press quickly, while larger parts naturally require more time per cycle. Since this stage impacts a part’s final density and dimensional consistency, we monitor this process closely and adjust die design and pressure as needed to hold tight tolerances for parts.

Design & Prototyping

Designing and prototyping powdered metal parts requires understanding key constraints like tooling permanence, uniform density limits, and straight-wall ejection rules. Providing support and expertise early on can save both time and cost later in a project, and that’s a philosophy we build into how we work with customers.

All tooling required to produce a part is designed in-house. The resulting tool geometry influences how powder flows and packs, in turn affecting the green part density and the strength of sintered metal parts. We also assess part geometry, material selection, and tolerances to determine what’s achievable in a powder metallurgy process. This often reveals opportunities for cost reduction or quality improvement that may not be obvious until someone with hands-on process knowledge reviews the print.

Quality Control

Consistency is one of the top reasons manufacturers choose powdered metal parts over other production methods, and that consistency depends on rigorous quality control throughout the process. Our quality lab includes Keyence image measurement systems, coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), hardness inspection equipment, and tools for evaluating density, flow rate, and surface finish.

We’re ISO 9001:2015 certified for the manufacture of sintered powder metal components, and our processes align with ANSI and ASTM standards along with RoHS, REACH, Conflict Mineral, Prop 65, and SVHC compliance requirements. In-house metallurgical inspection, statistical process controls, FMEAs, and product control plans support this certification, giving customers documented assurance that parts meet specification across batches.

For industries like medical and aerospace, where a single out-of-spec component can halt a production line or compromise safety, this level of documented quality control is the foundation that lets purchasing teams qualify us as a long-term, reliable supplier rather than a one-time vendor.

Secondary Operations

Powdered metal parts can require additional processing after sintering to meet final print requirements, and we handle these secondary operations without sending parts out to another facility. Our capabilities include CNC machining, coining, sizing, grinding, and deburring through both vibratory and centrifuge methods.

We also offer oil and resin impregnation, diamond honing, roller burnishing, annealing, passivation, heat treating, and black oxide finishing. Each of these processes addresses a specific need, whether that’s improving surface finish, adding corrosion resistance, tightening dimensional tolerances beyond what sintering alone can achieve, or preparing a part for a specific end-use environment.

Keeping secondary operations in-house shortens lead times and reduces the risk of miscommunication that can happen when a part travels between multiple vendors before it’s finished. It also means our team maintains full visibility and accountability over the part from raw powder to shipped product. Explore the full list on our secondary operations page.

Work With Compax for Quality Powder Metal Parts

Producing reliable powdered metal parts takes more than a single capable process step. It takes coordinated design support, precise compaction, controlled sintering, documented quality assurance, and the secondary finishing to match. We built our operation so that customers can move a part through every one of these stages with confidence, keeping timelines predictable and quality consistent from the first prototype through full production runs.

If you’re evaluating a supplier for an upcoming project, our team is here to review the print or concept. Contact us to talk through your requirements, or request a quote to get started.
